Finally Fashion!

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Wow. It has been a crazy month. This took me a bit longer than expected to put together but it’s worth the wait. I gotta give a special shout out to Luke Jackson for hooking us up. Also…hit me with an email if you can tell me what they say in the sample of the Daft Punk song I used.

The White Tents

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Yesterday I was lucky enough to get tickets and back stage passes to NYC Fashion Week in Bryant Park. What an experience. I went to two shows: Tony Cohen and Terexov and both were incredible.

Walking into the tents you were hit with a tastefully done tribute to the 50 years of Barbie. The shrine spelled BARBIE in 6 feet tall letters highlighted with famous dolls. We mingled around for a half hour or so and then made our way to the Tony Cohen show. No matter how many times you have seen it on TV or in the movies nothing can really prepare you for seeing it live. Now, I am not necessarily a ‘fashionista’ but the energy and anticipation in the room was incredible. The press pit, the white chairs, the flashes, the music. It was all so surreal. I can see why so many people are drawn into this industry.

When the show does start the music is incredible and you are taken away. You are now in the designers mind. Everything on purpose and nothing wasted…the models walked effortlessly and the garments hung perfectly. I got some great footage from the show and met some cool people. I am putting that together now and will have a sick video soon. More to come from Fashion Week 09.

Today’s Email Insider was great. Morgan Stewart, research and strategy for Exact Target, wrote a great piece about email “best practices”. It was a good read but the real nugget for me was a reference to a piece done by Dr. Michael Wesch a professor at Kansan State University. The piece is a video short describing Web 2.0 and what it means. With over 8 million views on You Tube it certainly has made the rounds but I never seen it. Take 5 minutes to watch the below. Its great from many perspectives:

A win for The Food Emporium

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

If you have ever lived or stayed in New York City for any extended amount of time you know what a pain grocery shopping is here. From day one I have had issues on where to grocery shop. The landscape of NYC grocery stores is crazy. There are deli’s, fish houses, veggie depots, wine shops, fruit stands.  There are little special stores for everything but very few stores that have everything. And even those stores are a far cry from the Supermarkets out West where you can drive a car through the aisles and half of them have hardware departments. You do have your Whole Foods but I have to get on a subway to get there. I admit that part of the romance of NYC is going to all those places and experiencing the process but sometimes you just want to get your food and be out.

That said, I want to give a tip of the hat to The Food Emporium this week. In searching for a new store in my hood I landed on their site. I have shopped there before but never clicked through. And although it could use a re-design, their site has clear messaging, a good reader for specials and a decent ecom engine.  They aren’t doing anything mind blowing or new but for a local grocer I say good job Food Emporium.  Expect a call.
